How do I get started?

Come visit a class -- you can participate or just watch! Beginners and visitors are welcome at any time, and you can just show up.

How do I get there?

The Center for Performing Arts is located at 3754 Pleasant Ave. South in Minneapolis.

Bus: route #23 runs along 38th Street from the Uptown Transit Station, route #18G runs along Grand Avenue from downtown; both stop at the corner of 38th and Grand, one block away.

Car: take 35W to the 35th/36th Street exit, head west on 35th Street to Nicollet, turn left and head south to 38th Street, then turn right and head west to the corner of Pleasant.

What should I wear?

You don’t need anything special. Wear comfortable clothes that you can move and stretch in. Sweatpants and a t-shirt are great. We practice barefoot, so don’t worry about shoes.  Once you earn your first belt (which will take at least 14 classes) we will encourage you to obtain a white canvas judogi.

What does it cost?

The first class is free.  Membership costs $35 per month, for whatever is available (usually two one-hour classes per week).  This fee covers the cost of renting practice rooms, replacing old mats, and liability insurance.

You also have the option of joining the Fugakukai International organization, which charges its own promotion fees and an annual membership.

Do you teach children?

No.  We usually require students to be 18 years old, and our average age tends to be above 30.  We will consider exceptions if the student is almost 18 or if a parent is going to practice too.  We recommend Judo and Karate for younger students.

Do I need to be in good shape?

No, you do not need to be strong or be in good aerobic condition to begin.  Practicing aikido will gradually improve your core strength, especially your stomach and neck muscles.

How do you compare to other Aikido schools?

We are quite informal compared to many other dojos. Our techniques are fairly soft compared to many other styles. Is there a beginner's class?

No, there is just one class.  We try to make it comfortable for beginners.
