Hi! Welcome to Uptown Aikido. We are a small Aikido club located in Minneapolis, MN. Aikido is a martial art invented in Japan about a hundred years ago. Unlike other martial arts such as Karate, Aikido has no kicking or punching. We also don't have any sparring or competitions. Instead, we explore ways to respond to an aggressive motion like a push or a grab by blending with that motion and diffusing its energy. Sometimes this results in joint locks or throws, but these are never dangerous or painful. Because Aikido relies mostly on balance and timing, progress doesn't require you to be big, strong, or young. Schedule Please show up 10 to 15 minutes early to help set up mats. You do not need to wear an Aikido Uniform (Gi) but please wear comfortable clothing suitable for exercise. Because of our styles strong Judo ties, we do not wear the traditional Hamaka but instead wear the standard Judo gi. Standard Karate gi are usually not strong enough stand up to routine throws and falls. The monthly membership fee is $45 and is used to cover mat maintenance, insurance, and room rental. We welcome you to try the first month for free. After one month, there will be a $10 mat fee for non-members. All participants will need to sign a release of liability form prior to participate for insurance reasons. The form may be download below. 3754 Pleasant Ave. Minneapolis, MN 55409 www.centerforperformingarts.net
